5/14 pericles funeral oration
the list for the Athenians values:
1) The Athenians have a democratic democracy just like us and they also trade food with other countries.
2) I underlined a couple of sentences that might be good for the trial because i believe that they have strong words.
For example one of them talks about how the Spartans spend most of their lives training to have courage and trying to meet suffering. and they compare how they(the athenians) have in their blood and they don't have to practice.
Something else that i underlined was that they don't praise Homer because the things he writes aren't true, they think.

Imus homework
Blog homework
1. According to the NAACP, why should Imus be silenced?
According to NAACP Imus should be silenced because they think that the statement he made really made fun of and spoke wrong about the African American women in the basketball team. The problem was that he wasn’t playing at all, what he said was because he really meant it. They want to take away all those offensive words out of our media. They have even talked to record players and convince them to stop the way they compose their music.
2. According to Frank Rich, why should Imus not be silenced?
According to Frank Rich Imus should not e silenced because he has the freedom of speech and because other people make fun jokes. For example there is a comedian named George lopez. He makes rude jokes about the Mexican and the people all laugh at them because he says the truth. Besides he himself is a Mexican. He says that if people loke him can say the truth why can’t Imus say it too?

Plato reading pp.85-93
My reaction to the ending of the section was that i was very surprised. I didn't think that they would actually choose that plan. I think that its a bad type of society outlined by Socrates because not everyone wants to do one thing or should i say job. In my opinion i think that if you want to have to jobs you should be able to. I do believe that a person could multytask perfectly.

The comments that Chris and Lishane left on my blog were really helpful because they encourage me to keep on writing the same way I did. They didn’t really give me advice to change what I wrote. What I like about what they said was that they told me if they could relate to what I wrote.
I was angry when i was seven years old and i lived with my grandmother. It all started when my cousin, Connie, who was 21, wanted to watch TV. My cousin Diana and i were watching cartoons and Connie wanted to change the channel. We got really mad because my grandmother made us give the control to her. Well we decided that we were going to run away because we were really madat everyone. We thought that my grandmother prefered my cousin Connie. So Diana and me started packing our clothes in a suitcase and we called Connie's boyfriend to come and pick us up. We waited for him in the corner and after standing there for two hours we realized that he wasn't going to come for us. We went in the house and they started making fun of us. My garndmother then told us that we needed to put our clothes away.
Chris connel
aw, I really like this piece about how dissapointed you were with reality. It really showed an amazing vantage point from that of a child and I really liked that. Unfortunatly I cannot relate to attempting to run away but I can't say that the thought never crossed my mind :]
2) Why the comments helped me write better? What I like to do paragraph.
I think that this comments that Jessi and Brittany left were really helpful. Because they gave me more strength on doing what I’m supposes to do, being a mom. I’m really glad to see that my classmates encourage me and that they don’t tell me anything bad about me having a baby. I thought that people were going to be mean and think bad things about me just because I have a baby. I really grateful to see that they help me get through this stage of my life.
My life as a teenager is very different from others. First of all i am a student, a daughter, and a mother. Yes i know,a MOTHER. I have a 4 month old baby named Daniel. He is everything to me , i love him to death. I never thought that i would be a mother at this age, but now that i am, i'm putting all my effort and time into him. Now i comprehend what my mother went through as a mother. I had to experience everything she went through, All the nights without sleeping, making sure he is happy, changing his diper and a lot more. I know that what i did was counterfactual but i will never regret having him. He means the whole world to me. I think about him all the time, and when i get home he is there waitin for me with a grin. That's what i most like his smile. I just can't wait untill he grows up and realize that i love him. I can't wait untill he calls me mom.
Brittany’s comment
Yah WOW. Being a mom is a big responsability to take on, but when he grows up I think that at the end it all will be worth it. You will also be happy that you did your job at taking care of him, and doing everything in your power to make sure that he was fed and taken cared of. I think that considering that your a sudent and a mother at the same time makes you stronger then you were before, and making your stronger can make you withstand more and more tolerance. I know how hard it is to take care of a small child at a young age, but I don't know how it feels to take care of my own child so knowing that you can handle it make you a hero in a way. Your especially to those who can't handle all of which you are experiencing right at this period

3/28 Republic assignment
I think that Plato or any one else would want to censor Homer because he creates a wrong image of the people, for example Achilles. He makes people think that Achilles is more important than gods. He makes him seem like if he is the most important character. Then the gods tokk Achilles side that showed them that they are unfair.
a. According to Plato, what are some aspects of poetry that should be banned and why? In other words, how can poetry undermine the education of a Guardian?
He does not agree with Homer writing about the after life. Plato believes that it doesn't exist.
And
b. What should poetry “teach” and why? Poetry should teach that a man is not perfect and that he has knowledge to teach whats right.
4. If you were talking to Plato what would you say to him? Do you agree with his ideas? Do you think poetry, or literature in general, should be put to the purposes that he says it should?
if i would talk to Plato i would say that i totally agree with him and that he is right. I think that they should censor Homer and the Hesiod. I kind of think that they are interesting to read but i do agree with Plato that they make a wrong image about the gods.

3/27 Republic assignment
I think that Plato or any one else would want to censor Hesiod because it talks bad about the gods and goddesses. He would write poetry talkin about what the gods did. For example he said that fathers would eat their children and that husbands would cheat on their wifes. He would write things that would make people think that the gods were basically like humans because they did what humans do today but even worst because they kill their own children for power. Plato writes about how the gods should be seen as good inmortal people.
a. What are Homer and Hesiod guilty of?
They are guilty of presenting a wrong image of the gods.
And
b. What are the two main characteristics of “god” and what are the laws/principles of story telling based on those characteristics?
The to main characteristics that the gods have are that they never tell lies and that and that gods are the cause, not of all things, but only the good.
4. Compare what you wrote in your personal reflection above (#1) with what Plato wrote. How close were you to what Plato wrote?
I think that i was very close to what Plato thought. I was actually right. because if you think about it what i wrote makes sense.

Socratic Seminar
I think that if you act justly you can find happiness but i also think that if you act unjustice you will also find happiness. I think that there is different types of happiness. If you act justly i think that you would feel happy and peaceful but if you act unjustly i think you can be happy but you will feel guilty. Let me give examples: If a criminal doesn't act justly to his community and gets away with it he will feel happy because he didn't get caught but he will also feel guilty. I think that there is different definitions for justice and happiness but this is my definition of them.
3/21 Italic paragraph
In your opinion, how can acting “right” (i.e. justly) help or harm the achievement of happiness? In your answer you need to first establish, in true Socratic fashion, what you mean by "right" (justice) and what you mean by happiness. What do you think Socrates would say about what you wrote and/or what do you think Thrasymachus would say?
I think that acting right can help and harm the achievement of happiness. For example if you aren't suppose to see your boyfriend because your mom doesn't want you to and you act wrong by disobeying her than that will bring happiness to you because you are seeing him. But at the same time you will feel guilty for acting wrong so in a way acting right will bring you happiness and peace to your heart. For me acting right means doing what you are suppose to or what you are being told to do or act. Happiness for me means a joy to your heart. Someone can bring you happiness and they make you feel zestful. I'm not sure what Socrates would say but i would think that he would disagree with me. I think that Homie T would agree with me because that would be like obeying the law, but my mom is like the law because she inforces the rules.

3/20 The Republic
I thin k that one of the best arguments was in pp. 20 340 b. Socrates says " But having made both the assumptions he went on to admit that the stronger sometimes give orders which are not in their interest and which their weaker subjects obeys". I believe that this is a great example of a good argument because he really explains his point well. Homie T is trying to say that justice is the interest of the stronger party, injustice is the interst and the profit of oneself.
2. What are Thrasymachus' two main points and what are Socrates two main points in response?
Homie T's two main points:
1) He uses the example of a person who gets caught committing a crime and is seen as a person of wrongdoing. But when he gets away with it they see him as a lucky person.
2) He tries to prove that justice is the interst of the stronger party...
Socrates' two main points:
1) He thinks that Homie T hasn't made it clear and that he is trying to say that injustice pays better than justice.
2) He uses the example of the sheperd and how the sheperd eats the sheep he has be raising.
3) Is it ever right to harm somebody? why or why not? what would Socrates/ homie T say in response to your answer?
I think that it isn't right to kill or harm some one because its seen wrong in God's eyes. I think that Socrates would agree with me because two wrongs don't make a right. For example when a person kills some one it isn't right to kill him for that. That is how the government think that the law is right when its wrong. I think that homie T would not agree with me because he believes more in the definition of justice a sthe government says it.
3/16 assignment
Sacrates thinks that Polemarchus is wrong because justice is not helping your friends and hurting your enemies. He starts to give examples like the example of the war. In response Polemarchus kind of believes what Socrate sis trying to proof. I think that Socrates is convincing because he uses strong facts.
AND
B) List 3-5 of the questions that Socrates asks that you think are the most useful in arguing against Polemarchus. Why are these questions useful for Socrates purposes?
1) And what about the just man? in what activity or occupation will he best be able to help his friends and harm his enemies?
2) So is justice use ful in peace time? well then, what is the use of justice in peace time, and what do we get out of it?
3) Then will just man use their justice to make others unjust? Or , in short, will good man use their goodness to make others bad?
This questions are good for Socrates purpose because he is trying to convince Pole marchus that he is wrong and by using this question he make him think that he is wrong.
AND
C) What lesson do you think Socrates/Plato is trying to prove by having Polemarchus give in to Socrates when his father (Cephalus) would not? Short answer response
I think that the lesson that he is trying to make is that an experienced old man wouldn't give in to what Socrates thought but an inexperienced young man did because he doesn't know any better.

3/ 16 reading assingment
Cephalus is Polemarchus father and he is very old. Polemarchus is his son and he is a resident in Piraeus.
What is the profession of Cephalus? I'm not sure what his profession is because i don't think that it made it clear but i think that he is just like a leader who is very old is resting.
What was Cephalus doing right before the discussion that took place? He was sitting in the garlanded in a chair sacrificing in the courtyard.
According to Cephalus, what are the virtues of old age? He thinks that the family needs to respect the older people because they were the one who fought and brought fortune up. He thinks that they need peace.
What are Cephalus' view of justice? He thinks that justice is not always right it could be wrong sometimes.
What is Socrates response? He believes that telling the truth and justice is not the definition of doing right.
Do you agree with Cephalus or Sacrates? why? I agree with Cephalus because he was stronger than Scrates. I have never thought of what he made me realize.

3/15 simile of the cave reading question(late excused)
In The "Simile of the Cave" i learned that there are a lot of similarities between the book we just read called Farenheit 451. Socrates talks about how the society just believe what the government tell them and they don't face the truth. He talks about how philosophers see the light or should i say knowledge and discover that the government is blinding their people. This part made me think of Farenheit 451. The whole book is based on the government not wanting their people to read books. If they read books they will find out the truth and that would make the society realized what they have done. It would open their eyes and they would create conflicts. That is exactly why the government does not want philosopher to become the government. In the "Simile of the Cave" there are characters who are very similar to the characters in this reading. Mildred could be compared with the people who are chained up. They don't see the truth and when they d they don't want to realize that they were actually wrong. I really enjoy reading this but i find it very confusing.

Due 3/1 Iliad section
Patroclus wants to fight for the greeks because Achilles has too much pride and even if he sees his men dieying he doesn't want to fight. That's why Patroclus wants to help out. Achilles agrees with him but tells hima that he has to dress like himself that way the Trojans wouldn't kill him. He also doesn't want him to conquer Troy if he isn't there. He wants to be the one who does and he is worried about his healthbecause he can get kill.
2. On p. 413 line 35 (approximately), Patroclus tells Achilles that Achilles is “cursed in [his] own courage.” What does Patroclus mean by that and do you agree with him?
What i think that he means is that Achilles pride is making him have a downfall. He is seeing his man die and he doesn't help because of his pride. I do agree with him because i think the same way.
3. My question is why or how did Achilles join the Greeks?

Late Excussed Iliad assignment
My opinion didn't really change after reading this section because i think he is the same Achilles i read about in the first chapter. He has more anger in his heart because of Agamemnon. I understand him because Agamemnon did give him good reasons to get mad at him. He took his prize that he eraned and the prize was even given to him by the Greeks.
This are examples of persuasive language in the Illiad:
Achilles:When he talks to the men Agamemnon send he tells them that he is not going to help him because he did a lot of harm to him. This is appeal to emotion because it is ovious that he is not fighting for him because he dislikes him.
Phoenix: When he tell Achilles that he is being disrespectful to his familly by not fighting for the Greeks. This is appeal to ethic.

2/27 Iliad assignment
My opinion about Agamemnon hasn't changed very much before i read this section. I still think that he is bossy and that he is too conceited. When i started reading this section i realized that he lost his self confidence and that he is doubtful with his army/ soldiers that they will defeat the Trojans.
Some examples of characters using persuasive language:
Odysseus: He was trying to persuade Achilles to join the Greeks by saying,
"All this... he would extend to you if you will end your anger. But if you hate the son of Atreus all the more, him and his troves of gifts, at least take pity on all our united forces mauled in battle here- they will honor you, honor you like a god".
I think that this strategy is emotional because he want Achilles to feel pity for the Greeks, he wants him to see that they can win with him and that they need him. He tries to convince him by telling him all the things he could have if he helps them out.
Nestor: He tries to persuade Agamemnon to not give up and to fight with Achilles by his side. "No one will offer you a better plan than this ... the plan i still retain, and I've been forming , well for a good long while now, from the day you, my illustrious king, infuriated Achilles...But even so, late as it is, let us contrive to set all this to right, to bring him round with gifts of friendship and warm, winning words." I think that this is also emotional because he is talking about friendship and how they need to become friends.
Odysseus: He tries to persuade Achilles again by saying: "All hangs in the balance now: whether we save our benched ships or they're destroyed, unless, of course, you put your fighting power in harness". I think that the persuasive strategy that he is using is appeal to emotion because it makes me feel sad when i think of the ships being destroyed. Maybe he is trying to make him feel guilty.

Iliad reflection
Achilles’ rage is justified and I support his decision not to fight, even if it means the Greeks might lose lots of men, or even the war itself. I think that Achilles is very caring because if he wasn't then he wouldn't of given back his war prize, Briseis. Achilles didn't want to give her to Agamemnon but he still did because he wanted to get Chryses' daughter back. He was really hurt and i bet he felt runned over by Agamemnon because of the pride they have. I could tell that he was upset because he even cried. On page 89 lines 423- 424 it says "So he wept and prayed and his noble mother herad him, seated nera her father, the old man of the sea in the salt green depths". i can also tell that he prays to his mother and that shows me the other side of Achilles that he doesn't really show. From this i know that his mother is very important to him because he turns to her when he feels depressed. I don't think that Agamemnon is like that because all he cares about is himself. If he is so caring for his people like he said in page 81 lines 135- 137. "But i'm willing to give her back, even so, if that is best for all. What i really want is to keep my people safe...". This is why i think that Achilles rage is justified. I know that he is a little conceided but he is just telling the truth, he know that he is a great fighter so why not say it.

F451. pp 66 Mildred's perspective
2. Take one of the characters in the scene and rewrite it (or something similar) from that person’s perspective. For example, if you go with the old lady I mentioned above you could start with something like, “I heard the wail of the fire engines and the screeching of the tires. My heart stopped like a dead weight because it could only mean one thing: They arrived! My books will be destroyed …..”
As i looked at him taking out those hideous looking books, i felt like my heart had stopped all of a sudden. How can he do this to me? i thought. I did not know how to react. All that i thought was what would my friends say. Would they turn me in and think that i'm the faulty one when they don't know the truth. As he talks all i'm thinking is that I had it with him I can't keep on faking that i love him when i don't and now i'm ready to turn him in. When i heard the sonorous voice of captain Beatty my whole world turned black. I wanted to fall into the earth's core so that nobody would ever find me. But instead i just tried to breath through my fear.
2/6 Hesiod wrting assignment
Zeus came to power when Gaea gave hima poisonous drink to give to his father Cronus. He first had to fight the Titans, which were with Cronus and who ever won they would become the king. At the end he did win with the help of the Hundred- Handed Giants and Cyclopes. Zeus is kind of similar to Uranus and Cronus because he also wanted to rule but he is a lot more different. He is more comprehensive and he made better choices. His grip on power is secure because he saved the Giants and Cyclopes. So they won't try to over power him.

The end of Farenheit 451
"Shake the tree and knock the great sloth down on his ass" this quote means that we should live our lifes to teh fullest and think that we might die any second so we should appreciate every moment we have. We shouldn't be ignorant people. I think that that is what he means.
Farenheit 451 pp 138-154
After Montag escapes he meets other people who like him also ran away becuae they disagreed with the people in town. They help him by telling him to drink something they made, i think it was coffe or tea, and they also tell him to put some of the liquid they gave him. That liquid would make him smell different and the hound would not get to him. before the people hid in the forest they were proffesors and they read books. Now they only memorize the books and they reveal the stories to other people. They think that in the future the information about the books will be written again.
Fahrenheit 451 pp 126-137
Fahrenheit 451 pp 110-125
The sentance that impacted me was "Beatty wanted to die". I know that this sentence is not very descriptive but it's very powerful. It has a lot of meaning behind it. For me this meant that Montag said this words because he saw that Beatty didn't even tried to mve so that he wouldn't of killed him. The word die makes me think of people crying because when someone dies most of the people cry.
Fahrenheit 451 pp 91-110
On page 103 when Montag is saying, "It was good listening to the beetle hum, the sleepy mosquito buzz and delicate filigree murmur of the old man's voice....". This figurative language makes me see the way Montag compares the old man's voice with the buzz of a mosquito. In my head i ould picture the sound of the old man's voice and the annoying buzz. This quote appeals to the sense of hearing.

Fahrenheit 451 pp. 80-91
Fabers' plan is to hid books inside the firemen's houses so that they could be caught with them and for once they would be the ones doing something wrong. In page 85 Fiber says "...print extra books and arrange to have them hidden in firemen's houses all over the country, so that seeds of suspicion would be sown among these arsonists". Later on he tells Montag that he was just playing and that he didn't really mean it. But they keep it into cosideration, the only thing is that Faber tells Montag that they can't trust anyone. That's why the lan would not work.

What i like to do
Fahrenheit 451 pp. 71-80
What Montag means when he said that the books point one way oranother, to Carisse, was that the books and Clarisse are some what in common. She talks about the world and how people and children are killing one another, and then she talks about the past and how the children didn't really harm one another. She compares the two worlds, the one in the past and the one that she is living in. She talks to Montag and kind of opens his eyes to let him see that what he is doing and what everyone else is doing is meaningless, and its just hurting people who want to do what they used to do. When Montag starts reading the books about the past he remembers when Clarisee used to talk to him about the people in the past. He remembers when she told him that houses use to have porches and the architecters destroyed them because the didn't want people to have time to think about the world. Montag knows that Clarisee was unique but he knew that she was right about the things she said. That's why he remembers her when he reads the book.

Dread
Fahrenheit 451 pp. 3-21
I think that the author made us know that Montag and Mildred are distant from one another because when he gets home he realizes that she tried to comitt suicide, by an overdose
Fahrenheit 451 pp.21-40
The children from now and the children in the novel Fahrenheit 451 are some what similar. They are similar because now a days a typical teenager would not spend their day thinking about the flowers they had smelled or picking up flowers and saving them over the winter. we don't wonder how the air might smell Today or Tomorrow, we just live our lifes planing what we are going to do next. The older people in the book are very different because they don't like books, they have different laws or rules, and they all the same things. By this i mean that their day is exactly like the next day and the next day and so on.
