Late Excussed Iliad assignment

A question i have for the Iliad is what does Phoenix have to do in the story?

My opinion didn't really change after reading this section because i think he is the same Achilles i read about in the first chapter. He has more anger in his heart because of Agamemnon. I understand him because Agamemnon did give him good reasons to get mad at him. He took his prize that he eraned and the prize was even given to him by the Greeks.

This are examples of persuasive language in the Illiad:
Achilles:When he talks to the men Agamemnon send he tells them that he is not going to help him because he did a lot of harm to him. This is appeal to emotion because it is ovious that he is not fighting for him because he dislikes him.

Phoenix: When he tell Achilles that he is being disrespectful to his familly by not fighting for the Greeks. This is appeal to ethic.

2/27 Iliad assignment

My question is why would Agamemnon think that Achilles would accept his ransom if he didn't accept Chryses' ransom in book one?

My opinion about Agamemnon hasn't changed very much before i read this section. I still think that he is bossy and that he is too conceited. When i started reading this section i realized that he lost his self confidence and that he is doubtful with his army/ soldiers that they will defeat the Trojans.

Some examples of characters using persuasive language:
Odysseus: He was trying to persuade Achilles to join the Greeks by saying,
"All this... he would extend to you if you will end your anger. But if you hate the son of Atreus all the more, him and his troves of gifts, at least take pity on all our united forces mauled in battle here- they will honor you, honor you like a god".
I think that this strategy is emotional because he want Achilles to feel pity for the Greeks, he wants him to see that they can win with him and that they need him. He tries to convince him by telling him all the things he could have if he helps them out.

Nestor: He tries to persuade Agamemnon to not give up and to fight with Achilles by his side. "No one will offer you a better plan than this ... the plan i still retain, and I've been forming , well for a good long while now, from the day you, my illustrious king, infuriated Achilles...But even so, late as it is, let us contrive to set all this to right, to bring him round with gifts of friendship and warm, winning words." I think that this is also emotional because he is talking about friendship and how they need to become friends.

Odysseus: He tries to persuade Achilles again by saying: "All hangs in the balance now: whether we save our benched ships or they're destroyed, unless, of course, you put your fighting power in harness". I think that the persuasive strategy that he is using is appeal to emotion because it makes me feel sad when i think of the ships being destroyed. Maybe he is trying to make him feel guilty.

DISGREEMENTS AND FIGHTS.

One time in eigth grade my best friend and i had this huge fight and we said things we regret. It all started because she didn't want to hang out with me and my other friend Carmen anymore. She thought that we were too boring and that she needed to hang out with some other friends. I was really mad because she was supposed to be my best friend and that's when she proved to me that she wasn't. Then some months passed and asked her why she did that and she answered me by saying that she was jealous of me and that she thought that everyone else prefered me better that her, i told her that it wasn't true but she didn't even hear me. Later on, her friends didn't want ot hang out with her and she asked me to forgive her and i did. We are now good friends but not how we use to be.

Iliad reflection

If you were an ancient Greek, which of the following statements would you agree with?A)

Achilles’ rage is justified and I support his decision not to fight, even if it means the Greeks might lose lots of men, or even the war itself. I think that Achilles is very caring because if he wasn't then he wouldn't of given back his war prize, Briseis. Achilles didn't want to give her to Agamemnon but he still did because he wanted to get Chryses' daughter back. He was really hurt and i bet he felt runned over by Agamemnon because of the pride they have. I could tell that he was upset because he even cried. On page 89 lines 423- 424 it says "So he wept and prayed and his noble mother herad him, seated nera her father, the old man of the sea in the salt green depths". i can also tell that he prays to his mother and that shows me the other side of Achilles that he doesn't really show. From this i know that his mother is very important to him because he turns to her when he feels depressed. I don't think that Agamemnon is like that because all he cares about is himself. If he is so caring for his people like he said in page 81 lines 135- 137. "But i'm willing to give her back, even so, if that is best for all. What i really want is to keep my people safe...". This is why i think that Achilles rage is justified. I know that he is a little conceided but he is just telling the truth, he know that he is a great fighter so why not say it.

My Rage- Cause

I was angry when i was seven years old and i lived with my grandmother. It all started when my cousin, Connie, who was 21, wanted to watch TV. My cousin Diana and i were watching cartoons and Connie wanted to change the channel. We got really mad because my grandmother made us give the control to her. Well we decided that we were going to run away because we were really madat everyone. We thought that my grandmother prefered my cousin Connie. So Diana and me started packing our clothes in a suitcase and we called Connie's boyfriend to come and pick us up. We waited for him in the corner and after standing there for two hours we realized that he wasn't going to come for us. We went in the house and they started making fun of us. My garndmother then told us that we needed to put our clothes away.

F451. pp 66 Mildred's perspective

1. Find a scene in Fahrenheit 451 that had characters who were afraid. It can be any scene, like the one where Montag and the other firemen burned the old lady’s books (like you did for yesterday’s assignment.

2. Take one of the characters in the scene and rewrite it (or something similar) from that person’s perspective. For example, if you go with the old lady I mentioned above you could start with something like, “I heard the wail of the fire engines and the screeching of the tires. My heart stopped like a dead weight because it could only mean one thing: They arrived! My books will be destroyed …..”

As i looked at him taking out those hideous looking books, i felt like my heart had stopped all of a sudden. How can he do this to me? i thought. I did not know how to react. All that i thought was what would my friends say. Would they turn me in and think that i'm the faulty one when they don't know the truth. As he talks all i'm thinking is that I had it with him I can't keep on faking that i love him when i don't and now i'm ready to turn him in. When i heard the sonorous voice of captain Beatty my whole world turned black. I wanted to fall into the earth's core so that nobody would ever find me. But instead i just tried to breath through my fear.

2/6 Hesiod wrting assignment

Explain how Zeus came to power. Write about these following issues: How is he similar/different to Uranus or Cronos? Is his grip on power secure or fragile? Explain why or why not.

Zeus came to power when Gaea gave hima poisonous drink to give to his father Cronus. He first had to fight the Titans, which were with Cronus and who ever won they would become the king. At the end he did win with the help of the Hundred- Handed Giants and Cyclopes. Zeus is kind of similar to Uranus and Cronus because he also wanted to rule but he is a lot more different. He is more comprehensive and he made better choices. His grip on power is secure because he saved the Giants and Cyclopes. So they won't try to over power him.

Descriptive writing

In the book Fahrenhei 451 there was a scene were the firemen are burning the old lady's house and she is very scared. Through those pages there were some words that were very strong and made the reading much more interesting. The words were snuffing, shuddering, bombarded, wild, glittered and drenched.
I think that the words he used were very appropiate in showing fear because they are very strong and they make you picture and imagine what he is talking about.

My Group

The most descriptive words that i thought that people in my group used were boring and monstrosity. I think boring is a good word because it makes me picture alma falling asleep.

Strong words

In the paragraph what i "dread" there were many words that i thought were strong. But in particular these three words stood out once i read the paragraph again; Deteriorate, preferable, negligence. The word deteriorate makes me feel like if something was going bad. In the sentece it talks about how i deteriorate my son's life, this makes me believe that i'm doing something really bad to him. Its kind of like failing. When i hear this word it makes me think of my grades, because i would freak out if i get an F in any of my classes.
